This week I have been without computer. We are in the process of changing Internet providers and they shut us off sooner then expected. I missed my blog surfing and my own blog. I have a dependency. Nothing to worry about quite yet. I missed punching away at the keys. The absence of the laptop, made me think of the my mom's 60's typewriter I used to have. I remember I loved using it as a kid, the sound of the motor humming after you plugged it in. The click of the keys as I punched away and the smell of the ink and paper mixing on the page. I enjoyed the labored process of typing.
The last time I used it was when I went back to college for the first time in late 90's for Retail Merchandising. I had a ongoing project for History of Costume. It was detailed documentation of each era of fashion. I wasn't computer savvy. The most I had really done is played Oregon Trail on the computer as a kid growing up in the 80's. I never got into computers, always felt more comfortable with the typewriter. But for this class I had to get cracking on the project (because I am the biggest procrastinator know to mankind) and it was due on a Monday and it was Saturday. The computer lab was closed and so I pulled out the typewriter. I sat for two days in front of that blue beast of machinery and enjoying every minute of it. When I handed it in, my Professor paged through it and she looked a little shocked and delighted. I remember her saying ,"you put a lot of labor into that." When I Received my project back despite the archaic type, I had gotten an A. Got to love typewriters.
I want one now, I wish I still had my mom's, who knows where it is now, in some landfill :( This one looks similar to it and I found it on a lovely website mytypewriter.com which has all sorts of vintage kinds and has interesting information on famous writers and there typewriter preferences. Maybe for Christmas if I am good.... Well for now it's fun being back on the blog wagon. It's nothing like the Oregon Trail and dying of dysentery (it was fun writing your tombstone though). I have come along way baby!!!
